If a writer and their manuscript are a good fit for our mission, we assess the feasibility of making the title successful, and we offer a publishing contract that involves paperback, ebook, and audiobook publishing and engagement support. We may also negotiate film rights.
Prior to offering a contract we research and prepare a profit & loss sheet and other information in order to determine the title’s potential for market success.
There are several factors we consider when deciding to offer a publishing contract:
📝💻 Conversation Starter: What conversations can this book start? How can we help facilitate these conversations? — Not what to think, but rather that we should be thinking and discussing.
📝💻Social Consciousness: In what ways is this book unique and transformative in its exploration of a social issue? In what ways can this book contribute to the work of making this world a better place?
📝💻 Supporting a Unique Voice: Social consciousness in literature also has to do with giving voice to those whose experiences, ideas and perspectives often go unacknowledged or unheard. In what way is this a voice, idea, perspective, or approach that needs support to reach a wider audience and connect with more readers?
📝💻Reader Profiles: What types of readers would this book connect with? How would we market and publicize the book so that readers know about it? What services and resources would it take to support these readers in conversations and connections?
📝💻 Our Capabilities: What services and resources would it take to support this writer? Do we have the infrastructure and capabilities to support this writer? If not, which of our partners or contacts might be better equipped to support this writer?
Production Process: Once a manuscript is accepted, the book production process begins, including:
Revision & Editing → developmental editing, reader response, line editing, copy editing, proofreading
Production → book cover & interior design, etc,
Marketing & Publicity → book tour, interviews, speaking engagements, readings, submitting for awards, etc.
Printing/Manufacturing
Sales & Distribution
Literary Engagement → How do I prepare to support readers in engaging with a title and with one another?
Bricolage Lit is an independent literary publisher. We are not a hybrid publisher and we do not charge authors fees or expect authors to pay for any publishing costs. Our goal is to make literary practice accessible for writers who are talented and motivated.
